How to Become a Medical Assistant in California

Heart2Hire · Career Guide

California does not require a state license to work as a Medical Assistant, but employers strongly prefer completion of an accredited program and a national certification.

The path

  1. Complete a Medical Assistant program (certificate or associate degree) covering clinical and administrative skills.
  2. Earn a certification — CMA (AAMA) or RMA (AMT) are the most recognized.
  3. Learn an EMR — hands-on Epic or Cerner experience is a differentiator.
  4. Apply to clinics, hospitals, and specialty practices.
